Ballarat to Skipton Rail Trail

An excellent rail trail running through rural areas and well away from traffic, some 53km in total. We drove to Linton intending to ride uphill towards Ballarat. But once we got going up the hill from Linton I assumed we were going up hill to Ballarat and I didn’t check our direction. It turns out we were going downhill to Skipton; meaning there would be a hard ride home. I was wondering why the mile posts were saying the distance to Skipton and not Ballarat. I was enjoying the ride too much to notice it.

Fortunately this rail trail is not as big a climb as for Boolarra to Mirboo North and we made good progress being only about an hour over-time.

Compared to the Lilydale to Warburton rail trail this one goes through a completely rural area. The few nearby roads are very quiet. For some reason there were quite a few gates that were supposed to be closed even though there were no cattle about. I don’t think cattle would be let onto the path and I could see no cattle tracks. Towards Skipton the track was getting over grown in places.

A rail trail well worth doing. By going the wrong way we missed out on Nimmons Bridge at Newton. Next time!
